THE ANORAK HOUR #337

This is edition number 337 of Phantom FM’s iconic programme presented by Ger Roe and Pete Reed as broadcast on December 8th 2002.

The Anorak Hour from Phantom FM

The first archive recording this week is the second short programme from George Long of irishpirates.com. This time around there’s a brief history of Dublin’s superpirate Energy 103.

Last Tuesday, RTÉ Radio 1’s Joe Duffy Show was given over to the controversy surrounding Radio Kilkenny’s loss of licence to KCLR – The Heart of the Two Counties. Sampled here are some of the contributions from people directly involved.

Next, K.I.C. FM – one of the most powerful Dublin pirate stations of this millenium so far – was brought to its knees by the ODTR in the summer of 2001. The station was forced off the air following a raid on their mountain site, but using a makeshift aerial setup from their city centre location, they were back on air within a week. This recording samples the first live output from their return.

As usual, Pete Reed finishes the show with a look at this week’s news.

THE ANORAK HOUR #339

This is edition number 339 of Phantom FM’s iconic programme presented by Ger Roe and Pete Reed as broadcast on December 22nd 2002.

The Anorak Hour from Phantom FM

Christmas on the radio through the years is the theme of this week’s Anorak Hour, which starts with a clip of Tommy Greene on his first day on Radio Dublin from December 1979. These days Tommy is with Lite Fm and he’s also sampled with his Saturday night ‘Soundtrack of the ’70s’ show.

From Christmas Eve 1985, Dave Kelly is featured next on the ‘Q Drive’ for Q102. Gary Hamill reads the news.

Sunshine Radio, with Paul Kavanagh on air from December 1983, is next, quickly followed by Mike Doyle on Radio Annabel from Christmas Eve of the same year.

Irish radio was never to be the same again. Gay Byrne’s final show for RTÉ Radio 1 aired on Christmas Eve 1998. It is extensively featured next.

From a stormy St Stephen’s Day in 1997, Philip Cawley on air for Radio Ireland (which was renamed Today FM shortly afterwards) is the next archive recording.

Finally, a sample from Dundalk station Radio Carousel’s Christmas Party from the mid-80s.

Pete Reed then presents the week’s broadcast news and brings us right up to date.

THE ANORAK HOUR #340

This is edition number 340 of Phantom FM’s iconic programme presented by Ger Roe and Pete Reed as broadcast on December 29th 2002.

The Anorak Hour from Phantom FM

The last Anorak Hour of 2002 features some output from local stations on Christmas Day this year.

Starting off the selection is Ruth Scott on RTÉ’s 2FM; she’s followed by Enda Caldwell & Ian Dempsey on national station Today FM; and then there’s Seán Ashmore on air on Wicklow’s East Coast FM.

Very few pirate stations had live programming on Christmas day. There were, however, two notable exceptions in Dublin: Freedom 92FM & Phantom FM. Phantom featured an incredible marathon broadcast from the one and only Steve Conway.

The world’s last offshore pirate, Arutz-7, is featured next with a short recording from October 1999. This is followed by a feature on the Voice of Peace, the former Mediterranean-based political offshore pirate.

The legendary Jimmy Young has retired from BBC Radio. The next feature looks at his long and illustrious UK radio career.

Finally in the archives section, a look-back through the years at Phantom FM.

As usual, to finish the show, Pete Reed looks at this week’s news.

THE ANORAK HOUR #342

This is edition number 342 of Phantom FM’s iconic programme presented by Ger Roe and Pete Reed as broadcast on January 12th 2003.

The Anorak Hour from Phantom FM

This week’s show starts with some airchecks of presenters who were on the move during 2002. Featured are Greg Gaughran in June; Aidan Cooney in November; Bob Conway in December; Jack Kincaid; and finally, the legendary BP Fallon and his one-off special show for Phantom FM last May.

The original Energy 94FM closed down last February. The next archive recording features moments from their last day on air.

Phantom FM is featured next with various clips through the years from the station.

Then, the ever-popular former long wave giant Atlantic 252 is featured with airchecks of Hollywood Hayes & Charlie Wolf on air.

Back to 1987 for the next archive recording. Featured is Jason Maine on Sunday morning duty for Q102.

On 15th December last year, John Public celebrated 20 years playing reggae music over the airwaves. Sampled is his show which aired on local Dublin station Jazz FM.

Finally in the archive section, we hear from from Barry Lang & Peter Collins at 2FM in 1998, two presenters who are no longer on your radio.

Throughout the show there’s a news review of last year, as reported by Radiowaves News, and the broadcast news is brought right up to date when Pete Reed joins Ger to finish the show.
