Station History

Dublin City FM is a full-time special interest radio service which has been on air full tome since 1992, following a two week temporary run in 1991. It broadcasts a wide variety of talk and music-based programming from the east wall area on 103.2MHz.

Originally launched as Anna Livia on 103.8MHz, the station was the first, and still the only, station to receive a full-time licence to provide a full-time specialist schedule. Its first broadcast was from Grafton St in the heart of the city centre.

After a number of relocations the station moved to its current premises in 2001, which coincided with the first name-change to Dublin City Anna Livia FM. This followed the frequency change in 1999 to 103.2MHz.

In December 2007 they rebranded from Dublin City Anna Livia FM to Dublin City FM.

Without doubt the station’s flagship programme is ‘Live Drive’ which airs twice daily during peak traffic hours. The programme consists of non-stop traffic news, which is mainly listener-led, and airs for three hours from 7am and again from 4pm. It broadcasts from the traffic HQ at Dublin City Council and has access to the live feed traffic cameras allowing them to give an up to the minute traffic service which is unrivalled.

How They See Themselves

Here, at 103.2 Dublin City FM, we aim to provide a special interest radio community service which stimulates, informs and entertains listeners in the greater Dublin area. Our strong blend of talk and music-based programming reflects a broad base of Dubliner’s concerns, interests and opinions. Programme themes and materials are sourced from local communities, special interest groups, local authorities and to a limited extent, national and international public service broadcasters, who reflect our core values and ethics.

103.2 Dublin City FM seeks to engage as broad an audience as possible. This includes some specific groups, largely ignored by commercial radio stations, for whom we can provide a meaningful and relevant service. 103.2 Dublin City FM provides its listeners with a unique radio service that reflects the lives and aspirations of the city’s wide range of inhabitants. Our commitment to providing Community Open Access Radio and related training, provides Dublin listeners with the unique opportunity to participate in the services and management of their own radio station.

103.2 Dublin City FM’s Board of Directors are all voluntary, under the categories of Community Groups, Volunteers, Business Groups, Employer/Employee Groups and Public Bodies.

A Message From The Chairman

November 2018

I’ve just had the honour and pleasure of being elected Chairperson of 103.2 Dublin City fm for the third year (Nov. 2018). This is the station which broadcasts to our capital city and has a listenership of 125,000 people each day. It is a community station staffed, mainly, by volunteers, with a volunteer board and a professionalism that would leave others in the shade.

Dublin is a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, vibrant hub and the station reflects that vibrancy. We broadcast programmes in English, Irish, Brazilian, Polish, Russian and Chinese. Every week we have programmes dealing with LGBTQ issues, mental health, books, media, death, hobbies, charity, theatre, astronomy, travel, education, science, business, scouting, motoring, volunteering, history, film, European news and sports.

We have every type of music programme you could imagine, from roots to rock, Elvis to traditional, Latin American and sounds of the cinema – with lots more in between.

We are the only station in Ireland to host Steven Van Zandt from Bruce Springsteen’s E-Street Band with his wonderful syndicated music show, and we have Tom MacCoughren’s very popular maritime programme as well.

Along the way, we keep Dublin’s traffic moving each morning and evening through our Live Drive programme which broadcasts from the Dublin City Councils Traffic Centre – you can’t get much more up-to-date than that! We also have one of the most popular mid-morning shows broadcasting on Irish radio – Good Morning Dublin.

In my first year as chairperson we pitched for (and won) a new 10-year broadcasting licence. In my second year, we introduced new structures and reviewed all areas of operations. In this, my third year, we are facing the challenge of finding a new home for the station – we are on the move!

Each year, since the foundation of the station over 25 years ago (as Anna Livia) we have presented a chairperson’s report at the AGM. Until this year, it has always been verbal. The 2018 report has been published as the first of a new, annual, initiative.

So, what can you do? Join us as a volunteer. Help us find a new premises. Share your expertise with listeners as a specialist broadcaster. Get your community group involved with our radio community. After all – 125,000 listeners can’t be wrong!
