Power FM first appeared in 1993 from a garden shed in Palmerstown in west Dublin. They moved to the city centre in 1998.
On 98.7MHz FM for 6 years, Power FM shifted to 97.2FM in March 1999. but ODTR action in mid-2001 forced them to become a web-only station until they returned to FM on 97.8MHz in April 2002.
A purge on unlicensed stations in May 2003 led to the station ceasing FM transmissions but they continued online.
Power FM returned to air on April 10th 2009 for ten weekends under a temporary licence on 99.5MHz FM.
A listener’s review, submitted by Dave Lowndes:
Currently continuing 24 hour broadcasts over the Internet, Power is one of those stations which fills a serious void in Irish radio at present. One time winner of the Smirnoff club music award for ‘Best Dance Radio Station’, it’s music policy (if you can call it that) covers the broad spectrum of dance and electronic music, be it commercially driven or underground/leftfield in style…there’s something for everyone on this station.
With its continuous programming being provided by over 74 of Ireland’s dedicated club and hobby DJ’s the weekly schedule is a showcase for how the dance/electronic scene has progressed in Dublin and elsewhere over the years.
The station is also highly regarded and supported by many individuals and outlets within Ireland’s dance/electronica scene. It has a solid and loyal following of listeners who are, for the most part, not catered for by any of the other stations.
So open your musical mind to the wide scope of ‘electronic’ music, be it dance orientated or for chillout purposes and tune in if you’re into any/all of the following…
Garage, Techno, Deep/Funky House, Drum & Bass, Breakbeats, Hip Hop, Soul, R&B, Nu-Jazz, Electronica, etc, etc, etc…
Radiowaves Station Page – October 2000
Power FM is nowhere near as commercially motivated as some of their other counterparts on the dial. The presenters are so laidback that it’s a safe bet there’s more than coffee being taken while records are playing on air!
Broadcast from the city centre, Power FM is worth a listen if you’re a dance fan…and even if you’re not, other styles of music are represented well! Overall the music reflects the presentation style. On 98.7FM for 6 years, Power FM shifted to 97.2FM in March 1999. Relax…
