Today FM started life as Radio Ireland in a blaze of publicity on St Patrick’s Day 1997. A change of name and a new image in January 1998 started the road to recovery but there’s little doubt that the one incident in its ten years of existence which has made the most impact was tempting Ian Dempsey over from RTÉ to present their breakfast show. This delivered a large new audience to the station and the breakfast show fast gained cult status.
The station’s publicity machine suggests that Today FM is bright, lively and cheerful and they’re not far wrong. It does however also have its serious side and where the Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show is the station at its best in the area of fun and frolics, the station’s current affairs programme when it had Eamon Dunphy at the helm produced some of Today FM’s finest moments.
Off-peak is where Today FM excels and offers a real alternative to other national services. Daytime Today FM however also offers up a strong personality-led mix and the station is proving more and more popular.
