The IRA Broadcasting Station

The IRA Broadcasting Station

The IRA Broadcasting Station was a very active political pirate radio station in 1939 which was located in a house in Rathmines, Dublin. At this time the IRA had declared war on Britain and were actively engaged in bombing campaigns targeting English cities.

A clandestine IRA transmission had appeared on October 25th, 1935 on medium wave which may, or may not, be related to the 1939 broadcasts, which were on shortwave.

The broadcasts had started in March and tan regularly, two-three nights per week.

The station was raided on December 29th by members of the Gardaí, accompanied by armed members of the Army.

Seán McNeela was one of four men on the premises at the time of the raid. He was sentenced to two years imprisonment but suffered death from a hunger strike whilst in custody. The hunger strike was for reasons unrelated to the radio station
