Athlone Local Radio

Athlone Local Radio first appeared towards the end of 1985 on 103.5MHz.

Following a short period off the air due to storm damage on December 3rd, ALR returned on 104.0MHz from new studios. Music played consisted of the best of British, Euro and US. hits.

It ceased broadcasting on May 26th 1986 at 8.30pm without any forewarning. The station had been on a wind-down since 3pm that day with non-stop music and occasional station IDs voiced by the station owner, Basil Hendricks.

It returned early in 1987. Presenters returning for the relaunch on 104.0MHz included Noel Lackey, Mad Murdoc and Ray O’Reilly, along with some new names.

Simon Draper sent us the following:-

I stopped in Athlone after a brief visit to WLS in Galway and popped in to ALR to see their set up. I had previously been working in Dublin following a spell on the Voice of Peace, an offshore radio station in Israel.

Basil Hendricks and Mary asked me to stay and do a slot. I agreed. They then found me accommodation and I went on air.

At the time, the station was located in the Chambers on the second floor. The equipment was basic: cassettes, mixer and turntables – cheap, but effective at the time.

I think I used the name Paul Kenny on air.
