Radio Free Derry – the Voice of Liberation

Radio Free Derry was run by Derry left wingers in the Bogside and was established in January 1969 as the Catholic and nationalist population took to the streets during the civil unrest in Northern Ireland. Against a backdrop of Derry barricading itself off from the occupying British Army, a radio transmitter was smuggled into the area and the station was launched from an eighth-storey flat in Rossville Street with the aerial on the roof. It broadcast traditional music, news and political statements urging people to keep fighting while the barricades remained.
