Radio Showband appeared in Dublin on the second last weekend in January 1965. The station was set up specifically to give airtime to music and features from the Irish showbands, which were a very popular phenomenon during that period. This followed test broadcasts featuring taped programming from Radio Caroline.
Ten men and one woman were behind the venture, which came from a residence in the city centre. The equipment used had been smuggled into the Republic from Belfast and the set up was designed to be easily moved in the event of a visit from the authorities.
The station reappeared the following weekend, this time in Belfast. It broadcast on Friday, then Saturday for half an hour on the same frequency as Radio Caroline.
It promised to return again ‘soon’, this time from another county.
