Swirl FM first appeared on an unidentified test basis at 5pm on December 11th 2000. It was a low-powered broadcast on 95.4MHz in the south Dublin area.
The name Swirl FM was first used in January 2001. At this point the station relayed BBC Radio 1 at daytime, with live programming between 6pm and 8pm in the evening, followed by automated chart and dance music which was played out using OtsJuke software.
On May 21st 2001, transmissions were moved to 95.6MHz, but there was still a lack of coverage due to low height at the aerial and transmitter sites.
In February 2002, the station settled on 97.8MHz.
