Sad Death of Radio Kilkenny Presenter

Just days after the closure of Radio Kilkenny, Mike Breen, one of the station’s long-serving presenters, died suddenly yesterday. Born in August 1947, Mike first worked with WLR in 1978. He was also a founder director of Kilkenny Community Radio (the pirate forerunner of Radio Kilkenny) in 1979 and stayed with them until they closed in December 1988. He was part of the launch team at the new Radio Kilkenny in October 1989 and was last heard on air on the station’s final day of broadcasting on New Year’s Eve. He had presented the Mike Breen show every weekday for 14 years on the Kilkenny station.
Mike was a native of Sixmilebridge in Co Clare and though he spent most of his adult life in Kilkenny, he followed the Banner County’s hurling fortunes with passion and affection. He also had a strong interest in gardening and co-presented the weekly gardening programme on Radio Kilkenny. Mike was a private person, highly professional, and a great judge of music. Mike Breen’s passing has left many people in Kilkenny bereft and sad, in particular his colleagues in Radio Kilkenny.
