New manager on the East Coast

The Board at East Coast FM have announced the appointment of Ciara O’Connor as General Manager at the station. This is subject to approval by the BCI. Ciara previously worked at Live 95FM in Limerick as Sales Manager, then at 98FM as Direct Sales Manager. For the last two years she has been working with NRS (New Revenue Solutions – the London office of an Australian Radio Sales Consultancy Company) dealing with stations around the UK and Ireland and helping drive revenue at those stations. Through NRS, Ciara has worked closely with East Coast FM, as well as Radio Kerry and Lite FM in Ireland.

Speaking to Radiowaves News, web designer Sean McCarthy of IrishVox.com said: “Radio is advertising. That’s what radio is…a billboard made of sound. I love it when people say radio is about personality. It is of course, and good music. But both personality ‘and’ music are constantly flogging themselves to a market, through advertising.”
Speaking in relation to the flashy graphics, Sean says: “Launching a site entrance – like the new East Coast FM presence – instantly gives a radio station two things: firstly – Macro provides the site visitor / station listener with an entertaining sound and vision ‘feel’ for the station. We used to have bumper stickers. Now we have websites.
“Secondly, Macro provides the station’s advertising agency and direct sales clients with a clear example of what the station can offer with regard to the radio station’s site based ads and promos. You can have a crap website if you want! You can even have a crap radio station, if you want. I have worked not only in broadcasting, but also quite extensively in the field of advertising, PR and branding. My latter work has taught me more than a few things about ‘pulling together’ a brand. Presence, and the continuity thereof, is everything. Here’s an example of lousy continuity: radio stations will spend a truckload of funds on the sound and promotion of a station, yet when you log on to the station’s website – zero entertainment, and zero representation of its ‘on-air’ presence. Visiting some of Ireland’s radio station websites is like buying a brand new music CD, only to find that it’s ‘blank’ when you play it!”
East Coast FM is Wicklow’s most-listened-to radio station, it will now be hoping that its ratings can also soar online.

Heart to take control of East Coast

Heart Media, owned by Seán Ashmore, will buy a majority stake in Wicklow station East Coast FM at an EGM today. Heart is set to buy out a number of investors, including Communicorp’s 27% share. This will give Ashmore, a director with the station, around 75% control of East Coast, which also holds shares in Dublin’s Country Mix 106.8FM and Kildare’s KFM.
